The UDIA NSW Award for Excellence acknowledges the best in urban development across NSW and the ACT. Winners and finalists are selected based on their standout commitment to excellence in one or more of the award categories. Winners in selected categories may also have an opportunity to enter the National awards.

The 2014 award winners will be announced at the UDIA NSW Austral Bricks Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner to be held on the 1st August 2014 at The Star.

The Worrigee Project

The project commenced in March 2011 and completed in December 2013. It is a 26 affordable housing development designed to meet the changing needs of tenants over the coming years in the Nowra/Shoalhaven region. The focus of this development has been on creating low maintenance housing that is flexible in their floor plans so houses can be converted to be fully wheelchair accessible or from 2 to 3 bedrooms at ease.

The development was designed to reduce common misconceptions that exist in the community about what constitutes affordable housing. The focus of the building design and the environmental management plan is to create an integrated housing development. As part of the development, there is also a 1.0ha public open space on the north-east corner where BlueCHP have created a new habitat for the endangered Green and Golden Bell Frog. Guided by a local ecologist, BlueCHP also added nesting boxes and other hollow logs in this space and replaced non-native plants and with local native vegetation.

The dwelling was constructed in stages allowing BlueCHP to hand over the management gradually to one of BlueCHP’s members, Southern Cross Community Housing who in turn has tenanted all 26 dwellings by January 2013.

Congratulations to Marcelo Steimbeisser (Head of Property Services) and the BCL Property Services team for receiving award nominations in two UDIA NSW Austral Bricks Award for Excellence categories for 2014.
